FREEHOLD ENGAGED THEATRE PROJECT
Performances & Workshops
Since 2003, Freehold’s Engaged Theatre has toured professional Shakespeare productions to communities with little or no access to live theatre. This year the tour will again include the Washington Correctional Center for Women, the Monroe Correctional Complex for Men, Echo Glen Children’s Center, a juvenile detention center, and New Futures housing community. We are also performing for the first time at American Lake Veteran’s Hospital for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The tour concludes with performances in Seattle for the general public.
" ... As a woman who has worked as a practitioner of the healing arts for thirty years, I can say unequivocally, this is good medicine – for everyone involved ... I sat in the audience with the inmates, and was moved by their responses. The stories enacted before them were their own, presented in the voice of the Hero. As an archetypal psychologist, I must say that this is as clearly an alchemical process as anything I have seen in my consulting room. The word transformation has been bandied about until it has very little meaning. It found its true tenor in the gym at Purdy last night. What hit the stage was a talented and vibrant troupe ... bringing into the light, the gold of the stories once hidden in the darkness of repression, repudiation, and shame. I have never seen anything like it." - George McGrath Callan, Ph.D

STITCHING IN CELLS: TEACHING PRISON INMATES THE ART OF QUILT MAKING
“Prison is effectively a negative period in many peoples’ lives and because one can see the finished article, taking pride in what one has produced, this produces a feeling of positivity within this desert of negativity.”
“It expands your creativity, which you would not give the time of day on the outside.”
“It’s the creation of the work for the V&A quilt that not only gave us great pride, but also purpose while we are serving our time. We used our surroundings and feelings to come up with the ideas for the patches that go to make up the quilt.”
“Stitching has given me confidence. Because people supported me I have supported others.”
“I used to be down the block all the time, but when I started doing Fine Cell Work I stopped getting in fights. I haven’t been in a fight for two years.” --Inmate, HMP Kingston
"I find I am more relaxed and tolerant in my dealings with others and would attribute this positive change to Fine Cell Work quilting... There is no doubt I find it soothing and calming in times of stress." --Nigel, HMP Wandsworth

CREATE CREATE CREATE / PRESENCE
The very act of creating - not specifically what is created - but the act of creating, ushers in a wave of clarity, a calming of the chatter, an inner peace that unfolds and opens. Through creating space, and adjusting alignment, creativity makes room for the birth of new ideas/perspectives.
An emphasis on creativity in a culture gives rise to creative solutions to social problems. It is a catalyst for change and growth. It is stable, sustainable, and extends exponentially.
